An Aug. 26 attack outside the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, killed 13 U.S. service members supporting Operation Freedom's Sentinel. Eleven Marines, one Navy corpsman and one soldier were "killed as the result of an enemy attack while supporting non-combatant evacuation operations," according to the Department of Defense. It was estimated that nearly 170 Afghan locals also were killed in the attack, which started when a suicide bomber approached a group of Marines at the Abbey Gate in the Kabul, Afghanistan, airport. The names of the fallen troops were released 24 hours after families of the deceased were notified. This was the deadliest U.S. attack in Afghanistan since the 2011 shooting down of Extortion 17, a CH-47D Chinook, when 30 Americans were killed. U.S. troops, including more than 2,000 Marines, had been rushed to Kabul, Afghanistan, mid-August as the Taliban quickly conquered the nation while the U.S. was withdrawing from the country.
