By Aug. 20, the United States had roughly 6,000 service members at a key airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, including the 82nd Airborne Division providing runway security and the 10th Mountain Division standing guard around the airport. The Army's role in the large evacuation at Hamid Karzai International Airport was to be expected. The 82nd Airborne is regularly tapped for such contingency operations. The division's commander, Maj. Gen. Chris Donahue, was dispatched alongside a division headquarters and three of its infantry battalions. Donahue was tasked with overseeing the U.S. troops who have secured the airfield to facilitate the evacuation of people fleeing the Taliban. Although overall leadership of U.S. forces in Afghanistan remained with U.S. Forces Afghanistan Forward commander Rear Adm. Peter Vasely, Donahue and his staff took over airfield security. "The task of securing and operating an airfield is actually a unique task that the 82nd can do, and Maj. Gen. Donahue has experience in that" explained Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby on Aug. 17.
