Brazil is "rich in natural resources but not in knowledge industries," according to Mauricio Tolmasquim, of government energy research agency Empresa de Pesquisa Energetica. But the country hopes to change that in the coming years, as it plans to put some 6.1B BRL ($2.85B) of public funds into alternative energy research in the near future. According to Alexandre Tanaka, of the government's research-financing organization Finep (officially, Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos), funding will be tripled for companies such as Bunge and Petrobtas, to increase ethanol production and develop bio-chemical products. The move represents a shift away from the country's policies at times when its economy was struggling with hyperinflation; under those conditions, Tanaka said that "it was unthinkable to invest in projects that yield returns over long periods. Technology innovation is a long-term investment."
