For South African potter Caroline Schulz Vieira,a body of work usually begins with an idea and some sketches.The idea could be born from a previous body of work,personal experiences or visual references.Born in Santiago,Chile,she emigrated with her parents to South Africa when she was 9 years old.She was educated at the German School in Pretoria.After matriculating she studied for a BA degree,majoring in Art History and German,at the University of the Witwatersrand,Johannesburg.After 3 years of making pottery on an informal basis she went to Chile where she studied ceramics with Elsa Pfenniger.On her return to South Africa she completed a 2-year ceramic apprenticeship at the Kim Sacks School of Ceramics.She established her own teaching studio in 1997.Her orderly teaching studio is run in a very professional manner.The dialectic of working artistically is clearly visible-she works towards a perfect result,and imparts this work ethic to her students.
