Recent news of the travails of a number of the world's larger container ship operators serves to reinforce the reality of the severity of the current economic downturn. While some shipping sectors have survived, and one or two have flourished, the overall picture remains gloomy. Much of this gloom is the result of severe over-capacity. The fleets of idle ships off Singapore and Piraeus, in the Gulf and elsewhere serve as a very stark reminder of the damage being done to the global maritime industry generally. It is all regrettably but unsurprisingly reminiscent of previous shipping market collapses. An outside observer could well be excused for saying "when will they ever learn?"
