In 2007 Hatlapa, the North German manufacturer of ships' equipment, invested US$4 million dollars in a joint venture in Korea. Ralf Nicolaisen, head of the subsidiary, flies out to Korea some five times a year to ensure that everything is working correctly. This is practically unnecessary though. Thirty-five employees turned over nine million EUR in 2008. This year the projection was for 12 million EUR with 45 employees. Hatlapa has also invested a further three million dollars in a second 2,000m~2 factory in Busan. In addition to steering gears, ships' winches will also be produced in Korea for the Asian market.
