Stronger demand for natural gas in the US should result in prices doubling from the current 10-year low of $2.55/MMBtu by 2015 says Shell CEO Peter Voser. In the short-term, Voser expects prices to remain low "but we would see a recovery...in the second half of the decade." Mr. Voser points to higher gas demand resulting "as coal is replaced by gas in electricity generation and gas transportation takes off." Shell is also looking into liquefying US natural gas for export to areas such as Asia, utilizing this gas in processes such as gas-to-liquids (GTL) to make clean transportation fuels, and using it as a PC feedstock in order to garner higher prices. Shell has already partnered with Chinese National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC), Kogas, and Mitsubishi to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Kitimat, British Columbia for export,to Asia. Also, current low prices have led to some producers reducing output following the boom in shale gas development over the past few years, with others shifting their focus towards more liquids rich plays.
