Early next year, the European Commission (EC) will release a report on the progress of EU countries in meeting their 2020 renewables targets. "We're doing an EU review, not only of the progress in meeting renewables targets but also of the transposition of the renewables directive," said Tom Howes, deputy head of unit for renewables with the EC energy department. The EU's renewable energy directive that was set up in 2009 calls for sourcing 20 of final energy demand by 2020 from renewable sources. The targets for the 27 countries in the EU include 10 of transport energy being sourced from renewables by 2020.
