A leak that caused 1.9K bbl of oil to spill in a rural area of Louisiana on April 28 has forced ExxonMobil to stop shipments on its 22-inch (0.56-m) North Line portion of the Heavy Louisiana Sweet (HLS) crude pipeline. The line serves Exxon's 502K-b/d Baton Rouge, LA (US) refinery along with Alon USA Energy's 80K-b/d Krotz Springs, LA facility; Calumet Specialty Products' 57K-b/d Shreveport, LA complex; Placid Refining's 57K-b/d Port Allen, LA complex; and Delek's 75K-b/d El Dorado, AR refinery. The North Line carries oil from the St. James, LA terminal along with offshore Louisiana crude grades. The energy major was not sure how long the line would be down and the US pipeline inspector is currendy conducting an investigation relating to the spill, but Exxon said it had contained the spill to an "immediate area which will enhance our recovery efforts." According to an official with Exxon's downstream government and public affairs office, "The oil from the North Line crude pipeline was contained in the immediate area and recovery efforts began on Sunday. The containment of oil will enhance our recovery efforts." Exxon added that the 16-inch (0.44-m) South Line portion of the HLS crude pipeline was expected to restart operations by May 4. An integrity assessment was completed on the South Line portion—which runs from Raceland, LA to Anchorage, LA—and Exxon found no problems that would prevent a restart.
