In Canada, a woman is murdered every 2.5 days — ranging from 144 to 178 murders each year between 2015 and 2019~1’2 — and in 2021, the rate offemicide is trending even higher.3 A person has been accused in these killings in 90% of cases reported since 2015; 90% of the accused have been male. Of the women murdered, 50% were killed by intimate partners and 26% by family members.~1-4 Ending the relationship does not end a woman’s risk of death: 20%-22% of intimate partner femicides were perpetrated by estranged spouses within the first 18 months of separation.~5 6
