In 2019,middle distillate exports from the US Gulf Coast(USGC)to Mexico totaled 232K b/d,a 6% drop on the year.Waterborne shipments fell by 28.6% from 2018 to 140K b/d,according to Vortexa’s estimates.At the same time,truck and rail shipments nearly doubled on the year to 92.5K b/d and accounted for 40% of total USGC exports to Mexico,compared to 21% in 2018.The increased share of truck and rail exports coincides with Mexican independent companies increasing their share of imports to 32%,compared to 23% in the year before,according to the country’s energy ministry.Truck and rail shipments come in smaller batches compared to mid-ranged vessels that generally carry 300K bbl of USGC clean products,thus reducing risks for buyers.Even though Mexico bought less middle distillates from the USGC,imports rose 28.3% on the year to 52.6K b/d from the US West Coast,a majority of which were waterborne shipments.
