Overall optimistic expectations of a further increase in global prices have prompted a significant rise in square billet quotes to consumers in GCC countries in January. Iranian material is offered to the UAE and Oman at $575/t CPT, up from $510-515/t CPT a month earlier. The price trend reversal in China's market will be weighing on billet quotes in all markets. Expectations of a recovery of demand in the Chinese market have been the primary factor behind the price rise in December-January. A cooldown of China's market because of a mismatch between actual finished steel consumption and expectations will cause a price trend reversal in other markets.
