Over the past month, prices for US HMS 12 (80:20) in Turkiye have decreased by $29/t to $413/t CFR, while quotes of European material of the same grade have fallen to $408/t CFR. Long steel demand is unlikely to improve in Turkiye in May. Speculation about the prompt need for large volumes of steel to restore the infrastructure has died down noticeably. Bold pre-election statements of local authorities are also losing their influence on participants of the metallurgical market. Moreover, the developments following the May elections raise some concerns and force finished steel buyers to adopt a wait-and-see attitude. Most of the debris remains unremoved, the affected region is still seismically unstable, investigations and lawsuits against developers are underway. In the circumstances, it is problematic and takes a long time to find investors for new projects. Besides, the earthquakes caused great damage to the country's already shaky economy.
