An increase in square billet prices in Asian markets in December has resulted in a short-term rise in semis prices to consumers in the GCC. Iranian product offers to the UAE and Oman are currently assessed at $510-515/t CPT. Downtrend resumption in Asian markets will push prices in GCC countries down. A rise in billet demand observed in SE Asia at the beginning of the month was caused by fears of a further increase in import product prices amid the need for restocking. Meanwhile, actual consumption remains limited. In Q4, deliveries to SE Asian countries have dropped by 320,000 t year-on-year, Metal Expert estimates. The biggest drop will take place later as purchases in the region fell 2.4-fold y-o-y in December.
