摘要

Ageism contributes to the displacement of seniors as active and productive members in the workplace, and this is also the case in academia. This creates challenges for faculty in owning an identity status that is affirmed by the department culture and is consistent with one's years. A lack of affirmation can lead to decreased utilization of senior faculty and/or to their ultimate withdrawal as creative, experienced contributors. Stigmatization and the loss of identity status are dynamics stemming from ageism that contribute to a lack of affirmation for senior professional identity. A life span perspective on academic career development is suggested and an innovative method for affirming senior professional identity developed by a senior faculty group in our department, Gray Matters, is described. Public Significance Statement This article addresses ageism in academia, using one clinical psychology program as an example. A life span perspective on academic career development is presented, and an innovative method for combating stigma and affirming senior professional identity developed by a senior faculty group, Gray Matters, is described.
