EIU expects the centre-right New Democracy (ND) administration, led by the prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, to remain in office until near the end of its four-year mandate in mid-2023. The government, which is the first single-party executive since the start of the euro zone crisis more than a decade ago, has maintained good levels of public support, given the challenges of managing the economic fallout from the coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic and the war in Ukraine. ND has also remained fairly united under Mr Mitsotakis's leadership, whereas the opposition is fragmented and ineffectual. Revelations since August 2022 about a wiretapping scandal have damaged the government's reputation, although it remains to be seen whether they will dent voter support for Mr Mitsotakis and ND. This, along with the abolition of bonus seats for the party that wins the most votes at the next parliamentary election, has increased the likelihood of a second election in 2023-24. In Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index 2021, Greece ranked 58th out of 180 countries and territories for perceived transparency in the public sector. It received a transparency score of 49/100 (higher is better), well below the EU and Western Europe average (66/100) and just above the global average (43/100).
