BEA's second estimate of Q2 real GDP growth was revised up slightly from -0.9 to -0.6, but with little consequence for the forecast. More important, real gross domestic income grew 1.4 in Q2 after growing 1.8 in Q1. Gross domestic output (GDO)—the average of GDP and GDI reported by BEA as an alternative measure of aggregate economic activity—grew 0.3 over the first half of the year even as GDP contracted (chart, top). On balance, these data suggest the US economy did not enter a recession in the first half of the year. Corporate profits as defined in the National Accounts (with inventory valuation and capital consumption adjustments) grew 26.7 in Q2. Profits after tax (without the adjustments) grew 48.8, driven partly by a large decline in state and local corporate tax receipts. In contrast, SP 500 operating earnings, similar in concept to profits after tax, declined 18.9.
