South Africa's political climate will become more volatile ahead of the next general election in 2024, preceded by the five-yearly electoral summit of the ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), in December 2022. These two events will shape the decisions taken by President Cyril Ramaphosa as he attempts to deal with a range of pressing challenges, both political and economic. Major priorities in 2022 are extending the roll-out of coronavirus (covid-19) vaccines and sustaining a post-pandemic economic recovery. Boosting the economy is pivotal to tackling high levels of poverty, unemployment and inequality, which are providing fertile soil for the seeds of socio-economic instability. Cracking down on corruption and dealing with the ANC's so-called radical economic transformation movement (exemplified by Mr Ramaphosa's predecessor, Jacob Zuma, and his allies) are interlinked problems. Mr Zuma's jailing, although temporary, symbolises an ongoing fightback against impunity and graft, which thrived during his presidency (2009-18). Despite the pressure on Mr Zuma- and his ally, Ace Magashule, the suspended ANC secretary-general-their malign influence will continue to pervade the ANC ahead of its electoral summit.
