Jonathan Shannon is Senior Director of Healthcare Strategy, at the Alpharetta, Georgia-based LexisNexis Risk Solutions. He takes a broad view of the extremely complex landscape around cybersecurity, and particularly, around identity, in the current moment. Recently, he sat down with Healthcare Innovation, to parse that landscape and to offer his perspectives on the journey forward. When you look at the current operational landscape of healthcare cybersecurity, what do you see? This is an interesting time for healthcare; data security has always been an important discussion topic; HIPAA was foundational to the idea of data exchange in healthcare, and protecting PHI [protected health information]. However, current market dynamics are fundamentally making the legacy approach to cybersecurity in healthcare (i.e., installing an impregnable firewall) obsolete. The rise of remote care driven by the COVID-19 pandemic and the new regulatory requirements around healthcare data interoperability are driving many healthcare interactions online, and we expect this to only increase over time.
