Cows can't jump over the moon; no one has ever touched a star, and according to the opening crawl of Star Wars, galaxies are "far, far away." But if rulers and tape measures don't work in the wider universe, how do astronomers gauge cosmic distances? How did we endow the night sky with a third dimension? And, given that space is expanding, what does the concept of distance mean anyway?
