It is well known that sodium oxide is very basic and sometimes too reactive to be widely used for refining in industry. However, its partial use for enhancing the refining capacities of conventional slags is attractive and interesting. In this paper, the thermodynamics of CaO saturated slags containing a small amount of Na_2O is discussed in terms of its activity and refining capacities for some impurities. For example, a few percent of Na_2O addition is shown to increase the phosphate and sulfide capacities of CaO saturated slags by an order of magnitude. Some industrial data with hot metal desulfurization are demonstrated to prove theoretical predictions.
