Excessive student loan debt is a major issue in veterinary medicine. As general funding declined, veterinary colleges expanded enrollment—mostly with out-of-state students—and increased tuition and fees to compensate. Tuition began rising above inflation during the 1990s.1 Currently about 85% of veterinary students have educational debt.
