The increasing demand for Internet bandwidth coupled with recent advances in WDM technologies spurred research and development focused on IP over WDM. While IP over WDM offers enormous bandwidth opportunities, a number of important traffic engineering issues must be reexamined from both a technical and an economic point of view. In this special issue, we feature five high-quality articles that cover topics related to traffic grooming, burst-traffic shaping, attack/fault detection and protection, and light-path provisioning.
