Dear Editor. Isokinetic testing is currently considered the gold standard for measuring dynamic muscle thigh strength (hamstring and quadriceps) [1,2]. Isokinetic thigh muscle testing can provide valuable information to design effective preventive strategies for athletes [1-3]. Yet normative data specific to the considered population is required to adequately analyse the results of these tests. So far, only 2 sports have published such normative data (soccer [4], American football [5]). Data reported for Rugby Union and Rugby League are based on small-sample studies (i.e., less than 50 players [6]). Moreover, there are large anthropometric differences between rugby players according to field position but also regarding running speed between the forwards and backs [7], which suggests strength differences according to field position. Therefore, a large normative database would allow us to draw comparisons between an individual's measurements and those of peers and also could help set adequate goals for injured players that may be more appropriate than side-to-side differences that usually serve as a reference. This situation raises the question of the clinically meaningful side-to-side difference in healthy rugby players without injury and therefore its purpose regarding injury prevention and pre-season rehabilitation.
