All rights reserved.Inspired by the costs of inaction in the context of climate change, a qualitative study was carried out to determine the consequences of a complete cessation of forest management in the canton of Valais. In order to identify the consequences, both negative and positive, semistructured interviews were carried out with 15 experts from the forest and related sectors in the canton. Respondents rated the consequences of inaction as farreaching, complex and largely negative, except in the area of biodiversity. The most serious consequences were noted in the fields of protection against natural hazards and of wood production. In the first case, expensive technical structures would be necessary, in the second the wood processing sector could no longer be supplied with local raw materials. However, negative consequences were also identified for the fields of tourism and recreation as well as alpine farming, among other things because in the chosen scenario the roads and paths through the forest may no longer be maintained. This study lays the foundation for quantifying the costs of inaction.
