A porter, according to the dictionary definition, is a 'person hired to carry burdens', and old-time movies are replete with scenes of wealthy travellers on luxury trains calling out to the porter for assistance. The porter was the person to seek out when the traveller needed service, especially something a little out of the ordinary; he inevitably was, to use modern parlance, the 'go-to guy' who could always be relied upon to deliver. Those days of pampered carefree travel, where comfort and personal service were the norm, are long gone. Yet in Canada, one company is determined to bring them back. It calls itself Porter Airlines, and not without justification. The name 'Porter' was chosen for its connotations of 'carrying with care' and 'lightening the load', suggesting that passenger care and efficiency are at the core of the airline's values.
