When the Civil Aeronautics Board awarded Northeast Airlines the 184mi (300km) nonstop route between Boston and New York in 1944, it was supposed to be the solution for the company's financial problems. The high volume on the 'long-haul' route to New York was going to help pay for the short-haul network in New England; it didn't work.
