With the global pilot shortage becoming more acute, it has never been more important to develop new and even safer ways to take people with little or no piloting experience onto a career track that gets them into the cockpit. Ab initio pilot training is a long-recognized and important part of that process. L3Harris has revolutionized the ab initio process through technology, using data to provide vital measurements and feedback on how training is progressing. L3Harris developed and deployed Flight Data Monitoring, or FDM, for its ab initio environment using technology embedded in its airline academy operations. This makes it data driven, more measurable and safer. The project began in 2020 with the first recorded flight data from Garmin 1000-equipped aircraft being processed through Flight Data Connect as part of an initial trial with UK-based Diamond trainer aircraft. Parameters needed to be customized for the aircraft, which were being operated in quite a different manner to that of typical commercial flights.
