The European Union (EU) Parliament went ahead with the adoption of revisions that will expand the scope of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) despite criticism from IATA. The EU political agreement, part of its Fit for 55 environment initiative, means the EU ETS scope will expand to include all flight departures from the European Economic Area (EEA). IATA had expressed concern about the expansion, pointing out that the CO_2 emissions of international flights departing EU/EEA airspace were already covered under the international CORSIA Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) agreement.
