Over the past decade, the Indian Navy (IN) has embarked on a mission to modernise the capabilities of its carrier-based fighter force. Eventually, this move will have seen the IN operate three very different platforms of varying descents over an approximate ten-year period: the single-seat British Aerospace (BAe) Sea Harrier FRS.51 and two-seat Harrier T.60 (operated from 1984-2016); the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-29K/KUB Fulcrum-D (which entered service in 2010); and either the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet or Dassault Rafale M, both of which are currently vying to secure a contract to provide the IN with its next carrier-based fighter force.
