Dhaka has urged Washington to waive a penalty which the US had imposed for over-utilisation of quota by the Bangladesh clothing exporters. In a letter to US Trade Representative, Robert B. Zoellick, the Commerce Minister, Amir Khoshru Mahmud Chowdhury, sought waiver of the penalty by which the US authority had deducted 350,000 dozen articles of clothing from this year's allocation. Some 175,00 dozen articles in Categories 347/348, mainly trousers, were seized by the US authority for shipment beyond quota. Altogether 3.5m dozens had been allocated for export, in 2002 in these Categories.
