摘要

The efficacy of common brands of anthelmintics, namely, Nilzan Plus~(R), Wormicid Plus~(R), Vermitan~(R) and Ivomec~(R), sold in rural veterinary drug shops and farm stores in Uganda, was assessed against natural nematode infections in goats over aperiod of eight weeks using the Faecal Egg Count Reduction Test. Ivomec~(R) maintained an efficacy of 100 percent for seven weeks then dropped to 92 percent. Vermitan~(R) maintained an efficacy of 100 percent for seven weeks then dropped to 98 percent. Wormicid Plus~(R) maintained an efficacy of 100 percent for seven weeks then dropped to 70 percent. In contrast, Nilzan Plus~(R) had an efficacy of 85 percent on day ten and thereafter the efficacy drastically declined to 19 percent by the eighth week. Whereas Ivomec~(R), Vermitan~(R) and Wormicid Plus~(R) displayed high efficacy against nematode infections in goats, Nilzan Plus~(R) was grossly ineffective. Trichostrongylus spp., Haemonchus spp. and Oesophagostomum spp. were the most predominant nematodes in Nilzan Plus~(R) treated goats post-treatment. These results are indicative of development of resistance against Nilzan Plus~(R). However, it is highly likely that the Nilzan Plus~(R) used was either fake or adulterated. This calls for the governmentto ensure strict quality control of veterinary drugs in general and anthelmintics in particular sold in many rural veterinary shops and farm stores in Uganda.
