I am at Gozo [Ghawdex], one of three main islands in the archipelago that is the Republic of Malta [Repubblika ta' Malta]. The main island of Malta itself occupies an area of 300km~2 (115sq mi), with a population of around 400,000. Gozo is 67km~2 (26sq mi) in extent-approximately the same size as Manhattan, New York-and its population is in the region of 32,000. Comino [Kemmuna], the smallest of the trio and lying in the middle of the channel that separates the other two, covers only 3.5km~2 (1.35sq mi) with a minuscule population to match. The other small islands making up the archipelago are largely uninhabited.
