Ash Wednesday...and Thursday... and... About that Icelandic volcano's eruption-disruption (Airways, July 2010), it helps to recall the adage that every cloud-even an ash cloud-has a silver lining. Thus, jokes such as: (1) European bankers to their Icelandic counterparts, "We asked you for cash, not ash!" and (2) "Well, it was the final wish of Iceland's economy to have its ashes spread over Europe." Or this tale from a Qantas agent who had to tell a passenger that the London flight had been canceled. "But that volcano has erupted before!" snarled the passenger. "Yes, sir, but that was in 1820," answered the agent.
