The problem of abstraction from a well penetrating a two‐layered confined aquifer, each layer being independently homogeneous, isotropic, and artesian, is considered. Three components of the total abstraction are identified: the contribution from well storage and contributions from flow in each of the aquifer layers. For the case of a constant total abstraction rate, analytical expressions are derived for each of these components. The transient variation of the three components is investigated by evaluating the expressions numerically with different sets of parameter value
