Claimed to be world-record breaking in terms of length, a high-temperature superconductor (HTS) assembly for high-voltage cable has been developed by Pirelli and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). Part of the assembly was a 50 m-long flexible conductor, which was assembled using industrial equipment at Pirelli's facility in South Carolina, USA. HTS cable systems can carry more than twice the current of comparatively sized conventional conductors. These systems have the potential to reduce costs and maximise the use of existing conduits for electric power transmission.
