Alcatel Submarine Networks has signed a 21 million US dolalrs contract with Cable and Wireless (Cayman Islands) Limited and Telecommunications of Jamaica to supply an undersea cable network between the Cayman Islands and Jamaica. The project, which will be completed in two sections, will incorporate what is believed to be the longest link in the world to operate at 2.5 Gbit/s - equivalent to a capacity of 30,000 circuits per fibre pair -without using electronic boosters on the sea bed. The first part of the contract will be completed by June and will link the first two main Cayman Islands, Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac. This 226 km-link will operate at STM-4 (622 Mbit/s) over one fibre pair. The second part, scheduled for completion by August, will supply an STM-16 link (2.5 Gbit/s) over one fibre pair between Kingston and Montego Bay in Jamaica, via Cayman Brac to Grand Cayman.
