Vladivostok (the name means, literally, 'rule the East') in the Primorsky Krai (Maritime Province) of Russia's Far East is the country's only ice-free port to the Pacific Ocean. Around half a million people live here, and visitors will be surprised to see many Chinese and Korean faces among them. The Chinese border is only 100km (60mi) away, and economic ties with Russia's neighbors have grown much stronger in recent years. Vladivostok, which with its many hills and bays seems like a Russian version of San Francisco, is also well-known as the eastern terminus of the famed Trans-Siberian Railway which leads from here to the capital Moscow [Moskva], 9,288km (5,771 mi) away.
