Following the success of the Fracmat project, which utilises Chaos Theory in the quality control of spring wire, the Spring Research and Manufacturers Association and the Mathematics Institute of the University of Warwick have won an award for a new three-year project. Called Dynacon, the new project aims to transfer the technology of non-linear data analysis from the engineering, space exploration and financial sectors into the springmaking and strip material industries. The Fracmat project (Wire Industry, September 1995, p 491) transferred this technology into the wire industry, by using new mathematical algorithms from Chaos Theory to characterise material variability and thereby improve quality control.
