The US EPA has unveiled its draft”Herbicide Strategy”to protect endangered and threatened species listed under the country’s Endangered Species Act(ESA)from conventional agricultural herbicides. The plan contains proposed early mitigations for over 900 listed species and their designated critical habitats. The strategy is focused on agricultural crop uses in the lower 48 states(those excluding Alaska and Hawaii),says the EPA,adding that”hundreds of millions of pounds of herbicides”and plant growth regulators(PGRs)are applied annually in these states, which”substantially”exceeds non-agricultural uses of herbicides and other pesticides, such as insecticides and fungicides.
