Written and superbly photographed by a captain who has flown the McDonnell Douglas MD-11F for Lufthansa Cargo, this is a first-hand account (in German and English) of flying the Polar route between Europe and Japan, via Fairbanks, Alaska-which is the center of attention. Separate sections are devoted to the vintage propliners that continue to fly from Fairbanks, the city itself, the 'Mudhens' (Boeing 737-200QCs) of Alaska Airlines (Airways, April 2007), bushplanes, and the vast state itself, particularly in winter. A handsome and commendable combination of aircraft and travel photography.
