Two different ways of achieving a spore ornamentation have been demonstrated inSphaereophorus, belonging to the Caliciales. InS. globosusthe ornamentation is formed within the ascus by an external secondary spore wall in an ontogenetic process with several unique features. InS. murrayithe ornamentation is formed at a late stage, when the spores have been released from the asci. Carbonaceous material formed among the asci and paraphyses is added to the surface of the primary wall, and a very irregular ornamentation is formed. The nameSphaerophorus murrayiOhlsson is validated.
