The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has deregulated Aptos, California-based US plant biotechnology business Ohalo Genetics' genetically modified RedVin potatoes. The GM event has been designed with an altered sugar profile that reduces glucose and fructose content in the potatoes. The APHIS concludes that the GM potatoes are “unlikely” to pose increased plant pest risk when compared with traditionally bred counterparts and can hence be deregulated as per the country's revised biotechnology regulations under 7 CFR part 340.
