Carl Zeiss has introduced an optical coordinate measuring machine for fast and accurate multi-dimension measurement, based on optical image processing and digital image analysis of precision parts, the ZKM 500, which can be controlled manually or by CNC. The company has also developed a fourth measuring axis for the ZKM 250. Among the features of the ZKM 500, Zeiss lists: high dynamic travel; the X- and Y-axes are in one plane; and the X-Y table is supported on air bearings, making it more resistant to wear. Zeiss says that new functional principles have been combined with tried and tested design components. The robust structure and the insensitivity to environmental influences, such as dust and vibration, make shopfloor use possible.
