摘要

Many studies have examined the impact of institutional environments and complexity of organizational settings on quality management in research and teaching. The interrelationships of various factors are the motivation for this study. Seven 'deadly sins' are identified that are to be avoided in implementation quality management practices in higher education due to their negative impact on research and teaching. The authors conducted seven years of research in this area to identify the inhibitors and promoters of quality management. This study considers only internal quality management though the same arguments proposed can be extended to external quality management as well. It assumed that there are key factors and preconditions that are part of the trade-offs that influence quality management in higher education. These sins are related to implementation of quality management and have the ability to destroy the quality management structure in higher education. The seven sins have the ability to negatively influence teaching though they are aimed at improving both. The empirical research is based on information collected from vice presidents and quality managers of universities or polytechnics and a nationwide survey among quality managers in the German higher education sector.
