THE LOCKDOWN-ALONG with the widespread fear of travel due to the risk of infection and the increasing number of countries imposing quarantines on travelers coming from Italy-brought devastating consequences for the airports inside the lockdown area. These included Milan Malpensa (MXP), Milan Linate (LIN), and Orio Al Serio (BGY) in Bergamo, which, together, had 49.3 million passengers in 2019, but were already declining in early 2020 as the COVID-19 crisis began to spread. Malpensa, which had already lost Air Italy (IG) after its demise at the beginning of the year, was the first airport to pay a heavy toll to the COVID-19 spread in Northern Italy; foreign airlines started canceling flights to Milan in the second half of February. EVA Air (BR) canceled its much-anticipated service from Taipei-its first new destination in Europe in 20 years-which it had scheduled for February 18.
