The NFL's Arizona Cardinals' players and fans have the best of both worlds: the relief of air conditioning as the desert floor swelters in the summer and the expanse of a beautiful desert sky when late autumn temperatures prevail in Glendale's West Valley. The $455 million, 1.7 million-sq ft University of Phoenix Stadium makes both comfort zones possible for up to 73,000 fans through a retractable roof, which takes advantage of the climate in cooler months. Two mechanical roof sections can slide towards the north and south end zones creating an opening approximately 240-ft-wide x 360-ft-long to fully expose the playing field.
