Global trade between nations continues to surpass the growth rates of national economies. This rapid development presents both major opportunities and global-scale headaches. International trade is slowed by a puzzling array of national standards and regulations. In the field of contamination control, however, an internationally recognized standard for the world's 75,000 cleanrooms is now taking shape. The ISO Technical Committee, ISO/TC 209: Cleanrooms and associated controlled environments, is developing multi-part documents encompassing the standardization of equipment, facilities, and operational methods. The cornerstones of the standard are ISO 14644: Cleanrooms and controlled environments, Part 1: Classification of air clean- liness and Part 2: Specifications for testing and monitoring to prove continued compliance with ISO 14644-1. These two documents are already available for use as trade references per agreement between a buyer and a seller. Other documents are in various stages of development with a projected completion date for the original series of ten documents by the end of 1999.
