Dr. Steven W. Carothers,founder, former President,and Director of SWCA EnvironmentalConsultants, is anecologist by training. He began hisprofessional career at the Museumof Northern Arizona in Flagstaff,Ariz. His experience there as Curatorof Biology and director of acontract program laid the foundation for his establishmentin 1981 of SWCA Environmental Consultants. Initiallya sole proprietorship based in Flagstaff, SWCA wasincorporated in 1984. By the end of 1998, SWCA hadgrown to nine offices in five states, and Dr. Carothersbegan shifting the company to an Employee Stock OwnershipPlan (ESOP). That process was completed in 2000when SWCA became 100% employee owned. Dr. Carothersstepped down from the top management role in 1999but stayed on as a Senior Scientist and Board Director, positionshe still holds. Under his watchful eye, SWCA, nowheadquartered in Phoenix, Ariz., has grown to 39 offices,stretching from Portland, Maine to Honolulu, Hawaii.
