The return of the inactive nurse to practice is facilitated by an adequate preparation for re-employment. However, the provision of a suitable refresher course is only the initial step in the return process. The returning nurse needs assistance in selecting a position appropriate to her educational and experience background and she must receive an adequate orientation to the specific position. She may question her own wisdom in attempting to return if she is not adequately supervised or if she is given too much responsibility too soon.Innovative approaches to helping nurses keep informed and to keep in touch with their profession during periods of inactivity will help assure a return to practice.
